Trying to Read ‘Life of Pi’… Without Success
So I wound up requesting The Beekeeper’s Apprentice through Bookmooch. This is all well and good because it cost me nothing… All I have to do now is sit around and wait for it to show up.
Unfortunately, I still need something to read in the meantime, so I went and selected three books from my TBR pile last night, The Curious Incident of the Dog In the Night-Time, Life of Pi and Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict. I flipped through Confessions, but the one I had more or less decided to start last night was Life of Pi . I’ve heard many good things about this book, but probably the thing that made me want to read it the most was the cover. I noticed that cover when hunting for textbooks about four years ago, and it’s stuck with me ever since.
The problem emerged when I started reading this book last night…
The book is about a boy stuck on a small boat in the middle of the ocean with a tiger, and how he manages to survive. Sounds fairly interesting, right? Well, it would be - but the book starts out with the boy (post incident) talking about swimming lessons and this guy he once knew and whining about not getting an award in college and how a waiter once said something rude to him… *sigh*
I’m having trouble getting in to this book. Some books snag you right away, from page one… Not so with this (at least for me).
You know, this is probably a good book; I’ve heard wonderful things about it. But I’m just not sure I have the patience right now for a book that requires a lot of work and focus before you get to the interesting part. I might wind up shelving this one until Mr. Hall and I are in more financially stable times and I have more free brain cells. (Of course, that might not help… it could be I’m just not going to be able to get into this book. Have you read it? Is it any good?)
So, I’m not sure if that means I’m going to tackle one of the other books I picked up from my pile (Confessions or The Curious Incident)…Or maybe I’m just going to go to the library today and pick up some other light mystery novel. Today’s an errand day, so I guess I’ll contemplated it while I’m out and about. I know that The Curious Incident of the Dog In the Night-Time captures me from the very beginning, because I read the very beginning at the bookstore (and that’s why I own a copy). Hm. This requires more thought. – Mrs. Hall
